CHAPTER 41

Deliberately entering at the rear of the building to avoid the desk sergeant’s eye, Dani scanned her security pass and made her way to her desk. Just as she’d hoped, early on a Saturday afternoon, the CID office was deserted. Quickly she logged on and waited nervously for her system to come to life.

While waiting, she unlocked her desk drawer, pulled out her notebook and reread the statement she’d made following Mat’s stabbing, although she’d read it so many times, she could recite it almost word for word. Then, she reached across her desk and picked up the briefing document Mat had prepared for Monday’s reconstruction. In every word, she could feel his determination to achieve a positive result. Her fear was he had somehow convinced himself making an arrest would change his own condition, and she couldn’t help but wonder if he also believed it might change theirs.

Last night, after the success of the incident room briefing, Mat had arrived home in a genuinely good mood. At his suggestion, they’d shared a Chinese takeaway. When they’d opened a bottle of white wine, Dani had almost relaxed. For once, they felt like a normal couple. For two hours their conversation had been calm and, at Barnsdale’s expense, they’d even managed to laugh. Returning to the station had given Mat a belief he could still pursue a career in the police. Dani knew his identity was built upon reviving his career as a successful officer and, if nothing else, she wanted to help give him that.

She clicked on her email and was relieved to find the two fire reports she’d requested. She flicked through to a second screen and found the forensic report on her mother’s body. She paused before clicking on one last file – the chaotic collection of documents her father had amassed during the final year of his life. After his death she had uploaded them onto her system but, until now, she’d never been able to face reading them. She hovered her mouse over the file before quickly clicking and sending them all to print.

The unit remained deserted but that didn’t stop her walking rapidly across the room to stand beside the ancient printer and wait for it to come to life. As she loaded more paper, something her fellow officers appeared incapable of doing, she heard the door to the kitchen creak open. Her stomach turned when she saw Karen Cooke enter the room.

‘I didn’t expect to see you here today,’ said Cooke, moving immediately towards her.

‘I thought I’d come in while it was quiet,’ replied Dani. ‘I’ve a couple of things to finish off for Barnsdale.’

‘She does love her paperwork,’ said Cooke, watching as the printer began to churn out Dani’s reports.

As each page printed, Dani reached for her documents and folded them over. ‘She definitely does.’

‘I heard you’re going to be off for a couple of weeks,’ said Cooke, following Dani back to her desk, ‘taking some personal time.’

Dani was no longer surprised at Cooke’s intimate knowledge of the station.
